He is a geologist, petroleum expert, prolific and engaging writer, administrator, and community leader. He was in the Western Division. Manager of Shell. The Government of General Ibrahim Babangida appointed him, as Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in 1992. In June 2005, he was appointed the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources. He was elevated to be the first Minister of Energy in January 2007 where he combined the functions of the erstwhile Petroleum Ministry and the Ministry of Power.
An associate of the Royal School of Mines, London; Associate Member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists; Fellow of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society; Fellow of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists, a distinguished recipient of the prestigious Feyide Award for Technical Excellence (one of the highest technical awards of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society), as well as a Doctor of Technology Degree from the Technical University of South Korea. The Nigerian Government awarded him the national honor of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in 2006.
Dr. Daukoru was the Alternate President of OPEC in January 2005, as a prelude to his becoming the President of OPEC and Secretary-General for the year 2006. He is presently the traditional ruler of the Nembe kingdom in Bayelsa State, Nigeria.
